The following is a timeline which civilians on this site would be familiar with. Thus, things that are covered up or are secret operations are widely kept from this, or put in a way which wouldn't compromise the integrity of some government intelligence.
-1941 - 1945: Steve Rogers became the world's first superhero. Through the injection of the super soldier serum, Steve became the pinnacle of human perfection, and was dubbed Captain America. Fighting against the Axis Powers alongside his friend and side-kick Bucky Barnes, the Cap became an icon who would be remembered for years to come. He even formed the All-Winners Squad as the first superhero team, though it was short-lived, becoming defunct after a year.
-April 1945: While combating the Red Skull, head of secret Nazi organization HYDRA, Steve ensured the safety of the world by crashing a jet which had been modified into a weapon of mass destruction into the arctic circle. His body was never recovered.
-1990: Charles Xavier begins recruiting young mutant teens to attend his private school, Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. His first student was Jean Grey, an 11-year old telepath with unstable abilities due to their manifestation.
-November 1991: In the aftermath of an orbital-station incident, The Fantastic Four is formed as the modern era's first superhero team, though more often the term adventuring party could be more accurate.
-May 1992: A professor of nuclear physics, Bruce Banner, rescues a young man inside of a gamma bomb testing site. Miraculously, Banner managed to survive, and as a result of an unknown genetic factor, the man survived with a side-affect. Due to the nature of his genetic deviation, Bruce's adrenal glands were affected, and his mutated DNA would trigger whenever the chemical began to travel through his system. Becoming a raging green monstrosity, Banner became the Hulk.
-August 1992: A professional wrestler turned vigilante. National television personality Spiderman has taken to the streets of New York City in order to fight street level crime. While much of the public continues to scrutinize this hero, much of the big apple has taken a shining to their new masked protector.
-March 1993: Tony Stark, billionaire playboy, returns from an extended kidnapping in the Middle East. A prisoner during the Gulf War Conflict, Tony began working on a secret project. Adapting a suit he'd used to escape from the limited supplies he had at the time, Stark developed a battle-armor which allowed him to fight crime, and save the world. The public began to know this hero as Iron Man.
-September 1993: A group of heroes, later revealed to be students of the Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, known as the X-men fight off the mutant terrorist Magneto and his Brotherhood when they attempt to assassinate the president Bill Clinton in front of the White House.
-September 1993: Another group of heroes, like the X-men, group together when a Norse God appears claiming to be Loki. Iron Man, The Hulk, Ant-Man, and The Wasp attempt to fight off the villain, but only the timely intervention of another, claiming to be Thor, wins the day. These men and women take on the names of The Avengers, Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
-December 1993: Iron Man's identity is revealed to the public as Tony Stark.
-March 1994: Captain America joins the Avengers, recently released from suspended animation in the arctic, to help them fight their losing battle against an over-raged Hulk and the Sub-Mariner. Steve is inducted as a member of the team in light of his actions, and so starts what many refer to as "The Golden Age of Heroes".
-April 1995: Due to irreconcilable differences amongst the team, the original Avengers lineup dissolves. In response to these events, Rogers immediately begins scouting for members of a new team, as he continues to live in the Avenger's Mansion.
-May 1995: Steve Roger's premiers his new Avenger's lineup for the public, the team now being funded by SHIELD.
-October 1995: The chaotic wedding of Sue Storm and Reed Richards takes place. While the party is crashed by a number of supervillains, the Fantastic Four's many friends who were in attendance managed to ensure the ceremony's completion. This marks the first instance of public-identity superheroes managing to get married.
-December 1995: Johnny Storm, on an expedition to the dark side of the moon, discovers a group of aliens known as the Inhumans. Due to a misunderstanding, the Human Torch returns with the Fantastic Four to stop these extraterrestrials from whatever plot they may have. During the battle, however, it is discovered that the Inhumans are, in fact, a secret society of humans who mutated long before the modern mutants did, into a separate species altogether.
-March 1996: A great threat appears to Earth, in the form of Galactus. With ease, the cosmic entity, with his herald Silver Surfer, defeated all Earth's heroes. Eventually, it took the ingenuity of the Fantastic Four to banish the god-like behemoth to another dimension known as the Negative Zone. It is unknown how long he will remain trapped.
-1998: Thanks to a rescue operation from the X-men to protect senator Kelly from the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, mutant protection legislature was put into effect, allowing for mutant-kind to be protected from discrimination. Of course, this would follow with a tide of laws being passed which either helped or harmed the likes of these superhumans.
-2001: Thanos obtains the Infinity Gauntlet, and all the soul gems necessary to use it. But through the combined efforts of all of Earth's heroes, Thanos lost the gauntlet, and the gems are lost across the galaxy.
-2002: Mutants are officially protected as citizens under the constitution. The Xavier's Institute now expands into a teaching center for all young heroes.
-2002-2003: An incident in a small town, by the acts of superheroes, forces the government to enact superhuman registration legislature. The entire heroic community seems to be split in half, fighting one another for over a year. Eventually the pro-registration side wins, but the law is overturned and does not make it past congress a second time. In the aftermath, Captain America was assassinated.
-June 2004: Citizens in Manhattan gain spiderman-like powers, though this chemical also forces transformations into man-spider monsters. Spiderman and a team of heroes he's formed to fight the threat manage to neutralize this, but the hero disappeared, this Spiderman never to be seen again.
-November 2004: A new Spiderman, clearly younger and smaller, appears in New York. For many, this marks the end of the Golden Age, as not long after the Fantastic Four retire, and the Avengers defunct permanently in light of Steven's death in the previous year.
-2005: Not only does the new heroic team The New Mutants form, trained by the Xavier's Insitute, and serving as a training program for the proper X-men, who remain active but now take members less frequently.
-2010: A team known as the New Warriors begin to fight crime, some actively identifying as the children of former Avengers, they intend to beckon in a new era of heroism which would parallel that of the "Golden Age."
